Sharpen · 8 steps

Step 1

Make the saw safe

Engine off and cool. Chain brake on. Gloves and eye protection.

Step 2

Rod into the crank

Use the rod size for your saw (see above). Tighten the set screw. Do not crush the rod.

Step 3

Clamp on the bar rails

Knobs loose first

Put the jaws on the bar rails. Not on the chain only.

Step 4

Latch behind the tooth

Pick the crank hole for this cutter side. Put the latch behind the cutter. Tighten it.

Step 5

Tighten all knobs

The jig must not move on the bar.

Step 6

Crank · light, even

Same count · every tooth

Do not force it. Hard sparks or no bite: stop. See “Problems”.

Step 7

Next tooth · same side

Loosen. Move to the next cutter that faces the same way. Repeat steps 4–6.

Then use the other crank hole for the other side. Same count.

Step 8

Depth gauges · every 3rd

Every third sharpening: flat file + depth gauge tool. Husqvarna 545: 0.65 mm.

Husqvarna 545 manual p.29 (adjust after each 3rd sharpening) + p.37

Steps 1–7: general bar-clamp jig method, made short. Not a Husqvarna procedure. Follow your jig’s own sheet.

Does it cut now?

Loosen. Put the jaws on the bar rails again. Tighten all knobs.

Sparks · no biteWrong or dull rod

545 = 4.8 mm rod. 460 = 5.5 mm rod. HT 131 = 4.0 mm file. Change a dull rod.

Shiny but no cutDepth gauges · chain

Depth gauges too high, or wrong rod size. Do step 8. Chain still won’t move on the bar? That is a different fault: check the clutch and drive sprocket.
